UNDERSTANDING BAHRAIN’S WORK VISA SYSTEM

INTRODUCTION

Navigating the professional working visa process in Bahrain can be a complex and time-consuming task. To obtain a work visa in Bahrain, the applicant needs to meet specific eligibility criteria, gather required documents, and follow a step-by-step application process. The type of visa needed will depend on the nationality, the purpose of the visit, and the length of the stay.

THE BAHRAIN BUSINESS ADVANTAGE

Bahrain offers a range of business advantages that make it an attractive destination for companies looking to set up operations in the Middle East. One of the key benefits is its low-tax environment, with 0% corporate tax rates and no personal income taxes. Additionally, Bahrain has low operating costs, making it an ideal location for businesses looking to minimize expenses.

TYPES OF WORK VISAS IN BAHRAIN

There are several types of work visas available in Bahrain, including:

  • Bahrain Electronic Visa: In 2014, the electronic visa system was introduced in Bahrain, allowing certain nationalities to get a visa electronically for tourism or business-related reasons. Depending on the nationality of the applicant, the visa may be granted for a period ranging between 14 to 90 days for 1 or multiple entries. It does not allow for employment.
  • Embassy or Consular Visa: Nationals from other countries that want to come to Bahrain through this visa may need the sponsorship of a Bahraini citizen, travel agent, or company to act as the guarantor. This visa is valid for 1 month and does not allow employment.
  • Work Visa: Employees will all need work visas to participate in any type of employment. This permit is valid for 1 to 2 years and entitles workers to residency. Employers arrange most of the paperwork.
  • Family Visa: The Worker’s immediate family members will need a family visa too, also known as a residence permit, so they can live in Bahrain during the employment period. Family members cannot work unless they obtain a separate work visa.

REQUIREMENTS TO OBTAIN BAHRAIN WORK VISAS

To obtain a Bahrain work visa, the applicant needs to meet specific eligibility criteria and gather required documents, including:

  • A completed visa application form
  • A valid passport
  • A passport-size photo
  • A copy of the contract with the employer
  • A health record from an authorized clinic
  • Academic or professional qualifications for the position

APPLICATION PROCESS

The Bahrain Labour Market Regulatory Authority (“LMRA”) plays a crucial role in the visa application process for international applicants. The LMRA is responsible for processing and issuing all visas before international workers arrive in the country. Employers can submit a request for issuing a new work permit for expatriate employees to be hired on their commercial registrations. The application process typically takes around five business days, but delays can occur due to various factors such as the completeness of the application, the efficiency of the employer in submitting documents to the LMRA, and any additional processing requirements. It is advisable to check with the employer or the LMRA for specific updates on the application status.

CONCLUSION

Navigating Bahrain’s professional working visa process is crucial for employers and expatriate workers. With its favourable business environment and diverse visa options, Bahrain attracts international talent. Understanding visa types, requirements, and the application process through the LMRA can streamline the journey to securing employment. Staying informed about visa regulations is key to success in Bahrain’s evolving market.
