Small and medium-sized companies (“SMEs”) are registered, autonomous enterprises functioning under Laos’ laws. GOVERNMENT POLICIES AND EFFORTS TO BOOST SMEs

DEVELOPMENT POLICIES FOR SMALL SCALE SMES

The Small and Medium Enterprise Promotion and Development Office, (SMEPDO), defines micro firms as small SMEs with no more than 19 employees. They generally produce handicrafts, medicinal plants, and herbs. The Department of Production and Trade Promotion, part of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, provides assistance to these businesses in order to increase their export potential. The government has laid out particular efforts to promote various items, including:

It affects SMEs in four major ways:

• Decreases production costs through cheaper imported inputs,
